The Ending. By time we get to the end of La La Land, Mia has taken an acting job in France and Sebastian is starting to get his own jazz club off the ground.Admitting they'll always love each
The love they share for each other is palpable right up until the end credits. However, break ups don’t have to end in hatred. Sometimes, ‘the one’ is simply not an option due to the timing, and that isn’t to say another ‘the one’ won’t appear again.
These things both manage to propel each person's respective dream, but the reactions from the other are why they can't end up together. So they each achieve their dream, and the core of the movie is that pursuing dreams is a foolish thing you may have to give up a lot for (a theme which Audition wears on its sleeve). It's a simple one, done well.
Updated Apr 10, 2023 La La Land's ending is an emotional conclusion to Damien Chazelle's musical, bringing a fitting (if surprising) close to Mia and Sebastian's romance. The La La Land ending doesn't get Sebastian and Mia back together, but that perfectly fits with the movie's core themes.
Summary. A pool party. A-ha’s song ’Take On Me’ is playing and Mia wanders through the party, avoiding small talk with a writer whose self-congratulatory monologue propels her, alone, to the bar within about 10 seconds. Then making her way to where the band is playing, she sees Sebastian, on keys.
The fire alarm in the kitchen goes off and Mia leaves. It’s the night of Mia’s one-woman show, and Sebastian is about to set off to see her, when he’s told he has to stay behind with the band for a photoshoot. Hardly anyone turns up to Mia’s performance and she’s devastated at the end when the seat reserved for Sebastian is empty.
